Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Co.
Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Co.

Pliés, flips, spins, effort concealed, power redefined, speed and precision, swivel smooth grace - the big, the colorful Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company presents the folk dances of Ukraine.

Pavel Virsky's genius was to capture the essence of the rich Ukrainian heritage of folk dances and present them in a format oriented toward spectatators, not the participants. In 1937 he founded a company of professional dancers and began gathering the traditional dances from all over Ukraine.

Virsky's gift to Ukraine, today a newly independent country of just 13 years, is this grand archive of national cultural history. Their gift to us is being able to share it with us.

Paul Anka
Paul Anka

The 16 year old Canadian kid who became an overnight international teen idol with "Diana," the hit he wrote himself, is all grown up... and what a 40 years it's been! Not only did Paul go on to record 5 top twenty hits within the next 5 years, he became one of the most prolific songwriters of all times - with well over 900 songs to his credit.

We all know the very memorable "Put Your Head On My Shoulder," "Lonely Boy," "Puppy Love," and "I Don't Like to Sleep Alone," but Paul Anka has written a long list of very memorable songs that other singers have made classics. Frank Sinatra's "My Way," "Hello, Young Lovers," the theme song for The Tonight Show, and music for motion pictures like The Longest Day and Atlantic City were all written by Anka.

Since he was a young man, Paul Anka has persued his star and his heart still sings.

Mark Chesnutt
Mark Chesnutt

"Mark Chesnutt gave honky-tonk music back its soul" -- music critic Robert K. Oermann

In a world that sometimes confuses style with substance, Mark has a knack for picking great songs and delivering them with real emotional resonance and a world-class voice. In so doing, he has become one of his generation's beacons of genuine country music. Chesnutt's hits include "Bubba Shot The Juke Box," Blame It On Texas," "Old Flames Have New Names," "Old Country," and "I just Wanted You To Know."

Nothing but country from top to toe, Mark Chesnutt's distinctive style and creative interpretations of country music have led some to call him "The Hillbilly Messiah."

Sons of the San Joaquin
Sons of the San Joaquin - Christmas Show

Back by popular demand!
From the heart of the San Joaquin Valley drifts the sweet three-part cowboy harmony that defines the Sons of the San Joaquin. This remarkable singing trio, consisting of Jack, Joe and Lon Hannah, pays a melodious tribute to all aspects of Western life and history. From a simple cowboy song to the Spanish songs of the Vaquero and the power of old time Gospel, the Sons of the San Joaquin have taken their life's love of singing and become the barometer for all Western harmony groups.

It's a grand mix of Cowboy western music and holiday favorites. We're delighted to have them back for this special Christmas program of harmony and tradition. "Sons of the San Joaquin are the only singing group alive who I feel sound like the original Sons of the Pioneers." --- Roy Rogers

National Acrobats of Taiwan, R.O.C.
National Acrobats of Taiwan, R.O.C.

Since the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 240 AD), dramatic folk arts and variety shows have blended with the deepest roots of Chinese civilization. The skillful performers often use objects of daily life, such as chairs and bottles, as stage props. Their perfect movements and showmanship have provided entertainment and relaxation to people from all walks of life for centuries. The masters of the Fu Hsing Academy have preserved the systematic teaching methods of ancient China to cultivate performers of folk dramatic arts in order to preserve this traditional art form, and pass it on to the next generation, who are now growing up in a rapidly changing society.

The aim of the Acrobats is to make this traditional folk art form accessable to modern audiences while continuing to perform in the time-honored, traditional ways.

Melissa Manchester
Melissa Manchester

The stunning redhead with the full, pure voice grew up in New York in a musical family. After "paying her dues" as a backup singer for Bette
Midler, Melissa Manchester broke out on her own with her first smash hit, "Midnight Blue." She went on to write and perform great music by herself and in memorable collaborations with Kenny Loggins, "Whenever I Call You Friend," and "Lovers After All," with Peabo Bryson. Her hit "You Should Hear How She Talks About You," won Melissa a Grammy in 1982 as Best Female Vocalist.

Manchester also won unusual notoriety for being the only artist ever to receive nominations for and perform two Academy Award nominated movie themes in one year, 1980. They were the themes to Ice Castles "Through The Eyes of Love" and The Promise, " I'll Never Say Goodbye."

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

" …Crowded with music, bubbling with fun!" The Plain Dealer

"Goin' Courting" has never been as much fun as in this rip-roaring stage version of the popular MGM movie. Millie is a young bride living in the 1850s Oregon wilderness, whose plan to civilize and marry off her six rowdy brothers-in-law to ensure the success of her own marriage backfires when brothers, in their enthusiasm, kidnap six women from a neighboring town to be their brides.

Bursting with the rambunctious energy of the original film, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is all boisterous fun and romance that harkens back to the glory days of the movie musical.

Manhattan Transfer
Manhattan Transfer, Unplugged

For over 30 years, the quartet of Tim Hauser, Janis Siegel, Alan Paul and Cheryl Bentyne have combined their voices into an incomparable fourpart harmony that has consistently set new standards for vocal music.

Officially formed in 1972, The Manhattan Transfer play jazz standards, but they have had hit songs on the pop charts, too. In 1980, the group earned the first of twelve Grammy Awards for "Birdland," and Siegel received a Grammy for her vocal arrangement. In 1981 they made music history by becoming the first group to win Grammys in both pop and jazz categories in the same year, with "Boy From New York City" for pop and "Until I Met You (Corner Pocket)" for jazz.
